Please join us on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, at 1:00–3:00 p.m., Eastern Time, for an Office for Victims of Crime Training and Technical Assistance Center (TTAC) Suicide Prevention and Intervention for Victim Advocates: The EDC H.O.P.E. Curriculum webinar. The webinar will provide an overview of the importance of suicide prevention activities within victim services and introduce the EDC H.O.P.E. handbook as an important resource for advocates, including a guide designed specifically for those working in tribal communities. The webinar will offer tools to prepare crime victim advocates to identify victims who are exhibiting symptoms of suicidality, provide a brief intervention and referral to clinical mental health services, and provide ongoing support to victims.

Heidi Kar, Ph.D., M.H.S., is a licensed clinical psychologist, international public health specialist, and subject matter expert in the interconnections between trauma, violent behavior, substance use disorders, and suicide prevention. Dr. Kar is the principal investigator and subject matter expert across several domestic and international violence, trauma, and mental health-focused projects, including the current OVC-funded Suicide Gatekeeper Training for Domestic Violence Advocates project. She has a broad cross-cultural background and is experienced in working with diverse populations, including youth, caregivers/teachers, veterans, American Indians/Alaska Natives, and both domestic violence survivors and perpetrators. In addition, she serves as an invited member of the Violence Prevention Alliance of the World Health Organization and the Global Violence Forum of the National Academy of Sciences and Engineering. Jennifer Myers, M.A. Jennifer Myers, M.A., is a mental health professional, consultant, trainer, and advocate who has worked to create systems change throughout her career. Ms. Myers is a clinical suicide expert and the training development manager for the Violence and Trauma team at the Education Development Center (EDC). She is an AMSR and Zero Suicide master trainer. Ms. Myers has more than 16 years of mental health counseling experience in a variety of settings, working with diverse populations that include college and university students, veterans, law enforcement, and LGBTQ individuals. Ms. Myers brings expertise in suicide prevention messaging design and in communicating key elements of peer approaches and gatekeeper training to lay audiences. Before joining EDC, she was the assistant director of mental health initiatives and the coordinator of suicide prevention at the University of South Carolina.
